Event Rate Results Methodology

HBIPS event rates are calculated based on number of restraints/seclusions hours divided by number of patient hours.

Restraints: number of restraint hours/number of inpatient psychiatric hours

Seclusions: number of seclusion hours/number of inpatient psychiatric hours

The Event Rate Results report uses a separate equation in the background for the denominator to generate an actual rate. Basically, the Inpatient days need to be converted to a per 1000 hours basis.

The formula is Denominator = (Inpatient Days * 24 hours)/1000

This takes days, converts to hours, and then divides by 1000 to get the per 1000 basis.

In the example below, the Numerator, Denominator and Rate are determined as shown.

1156 (Inpatient Days)*24/1000 = 27.74

Denominator = 27.74

Numerator = 0.25

Rate = 0.25/27.74 = .009 (rounded to .01)

Definitions

Numerator = Number of Hours of Restraint or Seclusion - this is converted from the minutes generated from entered events.

Denominator = (Inpatient Days * 24 hours)/1000

Population (Psych Inpatient Days minus Leave Days) = Inpatient Days - Leave Days
